Search engines work hard to give the user exactly what they’re looking for. There were ways in the past in which site owners could trick search engines into thinking their page was the best match to that search. Put that behind you. Search engines are getting much smarter, quickly. At one time, directories like DMOZ were a good place to add listings and get backlinks. However, these large web directories aren’t really relevant anymore. Keyword usage on a page is much more complicated these days. SEO professionals used to go as far as calculating the number of times a keyword appeared on a page to try to be in some kind of ideal percentage. That’s simply not applicable anymore and search engines are much smarter at deciphering what a page is about beyond seeing the same keyword used a bunch of times. Ideally page titles should include the search term for which the website has been optimized.

Google wants to send people to the best content. Faster is better for the user, so Google gives fast sites a bump. The visual content on your website is very important. More people are persuaded to convert if they get images, infographics, and videos talking about your product. Is the page load time excessive? Creative, interesting, and informational articles that really speak to an audience are much more likely to get shared, repinned, and re-tweeted. The best way to tap into that type of influence is to keep things relevant and specific. The information you are putting out there should actually help people by teaching them or reminding them of something important. User-generated content (UGC) sites and communities are two of my favourite places to find untapped keywords. Like titles, search engines typically give headings a higher priority. Clear headings that describe the content that follows make it easier for search engines to detect the major themes of your site. After conducting some keyword research around those phrases, settle on the ones that have a good search volume and are as specific as possible. The more specific a key phrase, the more likely a customer is to convert as they are able to find exactly what they have been searching for on your website.
